Vinyl fences are a popular alternative to wood fencing. They are weather-resistant, insect-proof, and never rot, splinter, warp or crack. They do not require painting, scraping, or sanding.
However, vinyl fencing does require regular maintenance to remain looking its best. Here are some tips to help you keep your vinyl fence in top shape.
Clean your vinyl fence at least once a year, more frequently if you live in a humid or water-front area
Avoid using abrasive cleansers or scouring pads as they may scratch and dull the glossy sheen of the vinyl
For a light coating of dirt, dust, pollen, and chalky residue, simply spray the fence with a garden hose or wipe it down with a sponge dipped in warm, soapy water
For slightly tougher stains, dampen a soft cotton cloth with mineral spirits and lightly wipe the fence clean
For algae and mildew stains, scrub with warm, soapy water and then use white vinegar or chlorine bleach (on light-colored vinyl only) to prevent the stains from returning
If you have a lot of fence to clean, consider using a gas-powered pressure washer
Conduct an up-close-and-personal inspection of your vinyl fence at least once a year
Check the fence posts, panels, and horizontal rails for any damage or instability
Ensure that each vertical post is solidly planted into the ground and isn’t wobbly, leaning, or loose
If you notice any damage, consult your fence manufacturer on how to proceed and ensure you do not accidentally void the warranty with a repair before taking action
Keep up with regular cleaning and make repairs as necessary to ensure your vinyl fence lasts as long as possible
